The Saturday qualifying sessions gave witness to a high-speed contest for pole position between Toyota Supras, Nissan Skyline GT-Rs and new comer, the Honda NSXs. In the morning rain began to spot the track about 20 minutes into the first session, and then began to fall in earnest. Every team did their best to put in a good time before the track conditions turned completely wet.


Michael Krumm claimed a superb circuit recored time of 1'28"812 in a Supra, beating out Masami Kageyama, who also broke the old circuit record piloting his Supra for Toyota Team SARD. Akira Iida assured a bright debut for the Honda NSX, placing a fine sixth fastest lap in the field.

Rain and wet conditions were the only description of the second qualifying session, leaving Michael Krumm and Pedro de la Rosa pole position. The Toyota Supras dominated both sessions, with three cars breaking the old circuit record and Supras taking the top five places on the starting grid. The Nissan teams worked hard, but the fastest Nissan crew of Masahiro Hasemi and Tetsuya Tanaka only managed a 7th place grid start with their Skyline GT-R.
