The SUPER GT Official Test took place at Sportsland SUGO (Miyagi Prefecture) on May 22nd and 23rd, at the track that plays host to Round 5 of this year's series. Both days consisted of two two-hour sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
The morning session saw the No. 18 TAKATA Dome NSX (Ryo Michigami/Takashi Kogure) run well, setting a top time of 1'17.231 early on. The car then set a 1'16.926, for the second-quickest time of the morning. IN the afternoon, the car went as quick as 1'16.136, for the best time of the day.
"Although we have 70kgs weight handicap on the car, the machine felt good. We didn't complete everything on our tire test menu, but I think we can go well here, like we did at Okayama." commented lead driver Ryo Michigami afterwards.
Fellow driver Kogure had an off-track excursion in the afternoon, due purely to a driving error, resulting in damage to the front cowl on the car.
Conversely, the No. 8 ARTA NSX of Daisuke Ito and Ralph Firman recorded the third fastest time in the session, before stopping out on track due to engine trouble. However, the No. 8 ARTA car that eventually scored the second fastest time for an NSX, recording a 1'16.231 in the afternoon.
The top time in the morning went to the No. 12 CALSONIC IMPUL Z (Benoit Treluyer/Kazuki Hoshino), with a 1'16.718. However, the car was unable to run throughout the first hour of the session due to gearbox trouble. Some dissatisfaction appeared to linger in the day's second session, though the car was third quickest behind the No. 18 and No. 8 NSX entries.
In GT300, the morning session saw the No. 27 direxiv ADVAN 320R (Shogo Mitsuyama/Nobuteru Taniguchi) go top. Taniguchi: "The car is going well. The Vemac really is a cornering machine, and should suit us well at both Sepang and SUGO. I think we have a good chance at both tracks."
Next up, it was the No. 11 JIM CENTER FERRARI DUNLOP of Tetsuya Tanaka and Takayuki Aoki; with the No. 101 Toy Story Racing MR-S (Morio Nitta/Shinichi Takagi) in third, the mid-ship car being particularly well-suited to the characteristics of SUGO.
The afternoon was where the No. 2 Priv_e Zurich APPLE Shiden shone as drivers Kazuho Takahashi and Hiroki Katoh managed to take the top time. However, in the last 15 minutes, the No. 47 Kiccho Houzan DIREZZA Z (Masaoki Nagashima/Hironobu Yasuda) set a 1'23.417. For the class, it was the most significant news of the day as the mark was set by 22 year-old rookie Yasuda.
"I have experience running well in formula cars and karts, but GT300 is my first time in Grand touring cars. To be honest, I drove SUGO for the first time too. I enjoyed this track which is like a kart course, running a narrow line, keeping away from any debris - although it got dirtier and dirtier as the session wore on" he laughed.
The top time in the morning was a 1'16.207, set by the No. 8 ARTA NSX.
Daisuke Ito: "There were a lot of cars that went off track, and the line was dirty from the beginning of the session. As for the power of the NSX, we didn't get the most out of it on the straight; and even though we were top, there's still more to come." he said disappointedly despite the car setting the session's fastest time.
The previous day's top time went to the No. 18 TAKATA Dome NSX, but the second day saw the machine waste an annoyingly long time in the garage due to transmission problems - more than half of the morning session, in fact. Although setting the second-quickest time in the morning, the No. 12 CALSIONIC IMPUL Z car also stopped out on course during the two hours.
The No. 18 TAKATA Dome NSX ran smoothly in the afternoon, setting a time early in the session equal to its best from the previous day - a 1'16.267. However, in the last fifteen minutes, the top time of all 15 machines in this test was set by the No. 18 NSX, a 1'15.956 - approaching the circuit record, set by Andre Lotterer (a 1'15.810 - ironically set when the German driver was piloting the No.32 EPSON NSX last season).
"The balance of the car was good, and as for SUGO, we've seen an increase in rear-end grip; plus the time was also really good. I'm relieved to see the change from last year. I can feel the response."
The No. 8 ARTA NSX followed in second, the No. 100 RAYBRIG NSX fifth - for a good showing overall for the Honda machines.
Meanwhile, the No. 12 CALSONIC IMPUL Z set the third fastest time, while top among the SC430 entries was the No. 36 car, with Juichi Wakisaka and Andre Lotterer at the wheel. With the pairing including a winner at the track (Wakisaka) and the course record-holder (Lotterer), the auspices for the duo are indeed favorable for the race here in July.
The GT300 class was dominated by the No. 2 Priv_e Zurich APPLE Shiden of Kazuho Takahashi and Hiroki Katoh. The pair set the quickest time of the two-day test with a 1'22.725 in the opening 30 minutes of the session.
Hiroki Katoh: "I went on the attack because the tires were good, though I wasn't confident of getting a clear lap. The compatibility of SUGO and the Shiden is not bad, either. We were able to take pole position at Fuji, and here we'll be focusing on reliability in the race." he said.
On this day, the No. 13 ENDLESS ADVAN Z (Masami Kageyama/Tomonobu Fujii) also ran well, settling into fourth place in the morning session, improving to second in the afternoon. The day's second session saw the No. 27 direxiv ADVAN 320R go top, despite its 45kg success ballast - clearly showing that the car has sufficient overall speed over its rivals.
