On July 28, the qualifying for the "SUGO GT 300 km Race," Round 5 of the 2007 AUTOBACS SUPER GT, took place at SPORTS-LAND SUGO (Miyagi Pref.). In the GT500 class, the TAKATA DOME NSX driven by Takashi Kogure and in the GT300 class the Privée KENZO Asset Shiden driven by Hiroki Kato won pole positions.

Qualifying #1  Weather:Fine | Course:Dry | Air Temp. 29°C | Track Temp. 34°C

The first qualifying session began at 11:00. The skies were clear and the air temperature was 29 degrees C. with a track temp. 34 degrees C. The first 20 minutes were for the GT300 class. Among the early teams to begin their timed laps, No.101 TOYSTORY Racing apr MR-S(Hiroaki Ishiura) posted a time of 1 min. 23.192 sec. to take the lead. The first to better that time was the No. 2 Privée KENZO Asset Shiden (Hiroki Kato) with a time of 1 min. 23.092 sec. After that, the No. 13 ENDLESS ADVAN SENZAIKAKUMEI Z (Masami Kageyama), No. 43 ARTA Garaiya (Shinichi Takagi), and No.46 houzan DUNLOP Z (Kota Sasaki) tried to better that time.
Among them, No. 43 ran a 1 min. 22. 665 sec. time on its second lap. This would be the only time in the 1 min. 22 sec. range and it was enough to take the lead. No. 46 was unable to better the time of No. 2 and had to settle for 3rd place. In 4th place was No. 101 and in 5th No. 13.

After 20 minutes, a GT300 ran off the track just before the start of the GT500 class session, which brought out a red flag. Ten minutes later the 20-minute GT500 class session began. While the other teams were biding their time, No.100 RAYBRIG NSX(Dominik Schwager) decided to make an early timed run, perhaps because of its big 60 kg weight handicap. Turning in a time in the lower 1 min. 16 sec. range, which became the first time to beat. The other teams didn't start their serious timed laps until just seven or eight minutes were left in the session. Showing a great run among these was the No.18 TAKATADOME NSX (Takashi Kogure). In his first timed lap he broke into the low 1 min. 15 sec. range with a 1 min. 15.353 sec. time. After that he improved his time to 1 min. 14.784 sec. This put the team far ahead of the competition. In the hot competition for 2nd place with its numerous turnovers, it was the No.23 XANAVI NISMO Z (Richard Lyons). But the time was far behind that of No.18 at 1 min. 15. 621 sec. Qualifying 3rd was No. 32 EPSON NSX (Loic Duval) and in 4th came No.1 housan TOM'S SC430(Andre Lotterer). With this the NSX, Z and SC430 teams had split the top places. In the following mixed session there were no further changes in the qualifying order and the Super Lap participants were thus decided.

There was an change in the GT300 class, however. The No.7 RE Amamiya ADVAN RX-7(Hiroyuki Iiri), which had only managed a 12th place time in the first session, made another try amidst the confusion of the mixed session and managed to run a 9th place time of 1 min. 23.600 sec. and qualify for the Super Lap.

Qualifying #2/Super Lap  Weather:Fine | Course:Dry | Air Temp. 31° | Track Temp. 37°

The second qualifying session began at 14:30. Despite the cloudy skies, the temperature had risen to 31 degrees C. and the track temperature to 37 degrees C. The weather report had predicted a considerable chance of rain but it was never to fall. The first 20 minutes were for the GT300 class and the next 20 minutes for the GT500 class. After that, the Super Lap for the top ten qualifiers of the GT300 class began.

The first team to beat the 10th-place qualifying time from the morning session of 1 min. 23. 6 sec. was the third runner, No. 62 WILLCOM ADVAN VEMAC408R (Haruki Kurosawa) with a 1 min. 23. 360 sec. lap. The first machine to beat that time was the 6th runner, No.13 ENDLESS ADVAN SENZAIKAKUMEI Z (Masami Kageyama). That time was 1 min. 23.285 sec., which bettered Kageyama's own time from the morning session. The next runner, No.101 TOY STORY Racing apr MR-S (Hiroaki Ishiura) was unable to improve unable to improve on its morning time and fell back in the qualifying order. The third fastest qualifier from the morning, No. 46 houzan DUNLOP Z (Kota Sasaki), managed to run faster than No. 13's pace through the first sector of the course but failed to maintain the pace in the latter half of its lap. The morning's second fastest qualifier, No .2 Privée KENZO Asset Shiden (Hiroki Kato), turned in a fast 1 min. 22.760 sec. to improve on its morning time by more than 0.3 seconds. And claim the lead.
The last to run, No. 43 ARTA Garaiya (Shinichi Takagi), also managed to better its morning time but was unable to better No. 2's Super Lap time and fell to second position in the qualifying order. This reversal gave No. 2 the pole position for the next day's race. This represented No. 2's second class pole of the season, following the one at Okayama in round two. As for No. 101, which has scored four consecutive podium finishes this season, it would be starting from 6th position on the starting grid.

In the following GT500 class Super Lap, the first three runners were unable to break the 1 min. 16 sec. barrier. The fourth runner, No. 8 ARTA NSX (Daisuke Ito), managed a 1 min. 15. 545 sec. lap that put it temporarily in the lead. Immediately after that, however, No. 17 REAL NSX (Toshihiro Kaneishi), the seventh runner, No.1 houzan TOM'S SC430(Andre Lotterer) and the eighth runner, No. 32 EPSON NSX (Loic Duval), all managed to dip under 1 min. 16 sec. but could not beat No. 8's time. As all watched to se if the final runner, No. 18 TAKATA DOME NSX (Takashi Kogure) could beat No. 8's time and take the PP, Kogure proved to be faster than any other machine through all of the turns over the first half of the course. In the end, Kogure ran a 1 min. 15.120 sec. lap, 0.4 sec. faster than No. 8. This gave Kogure his third consecutive PP this season. And, with teammate Ryo Michigami's PP from round two, this was the No. 18 team's fourth consecutive PP in a row, which set a new Super GT record.

Due to the 38-car starter limit, No. 9 LEYJUN DUNLOP MT900, No. 67 triple A GALLARDO RG-3 and No. 70 NOMAD GAIKOKUYA ADVAN GT3-RS were unfortunately unable to qualify for the next day's race.

Takashi Kogure
I was able to run a time in the 1 min. 14 sec range in the first (morning) qualifying session, but in the Super Lap my time was in the 15 sec. In the morning session I had run in the 15 sec. range on my first timed lap and then improved to a 14 sec. time on the next lap. You may say it is a problem with how I run, but I believe that if I had more time to warm up the front tires I could have run a faster time in the Super Lap as well, Still, I am very glad that we got the pole position. You say that three consecutive PPs ties the record? If you ask me how I feel, I can't help but remember last year in the Formula Nippon (where Kogure had four consecutive PPs but failed to score any points in the races) (laughs uncomfortably). I am good at the second half sector of the SUGO course. It is a course where I can drive with a rhythm and don't even need to think about it. I guess it just suits my nature. Suzuka and Sepang are courses where I really have to concentrate to get fast times. But that doesn't mean that I am not running with concentration here at SUGO (laughs).
Ryo Michigami
In the last few races I have been concentrating on the race distance setting and I have a good feeling here at SUGO too. I don't care if it rains or is clear, but if it changes from one to the other in the middle of the race it makes things frantic. If that happens, I want to make it work in our favor.

The track condition was different today from that of yesterday's free practice session. So, we changed our settings in the afternoon session before the Super Lap. That improved things a lot and gave me a very good machine set-up for the Super Lap. Still I wasn't able to run a time faster than the morning time of the Garaiya team(1 min. 22.665 sec.), so I expected us to qualify in 2nd or 3rd. I feel like Garaiya gave us a present in letting us win the pole position (laughs). This is a circuit where it is hard to pass your competitors, so we really wanted to do well in the qualifying. So, I am grateful to everyone that we were able to get the pole position and I want to make the most of it in tomorrow's race. [About the weather for the race] Unless it rains only on our car, the race conditions are the same for everyone and the weather is just one part of the race. The only thing we have to do is go out and try our best.
Kazuho Takahashi
The biggest worry in a race is how well the second driver (Takahashi himself) performs (laughs). Thanks to the collision with another car last time at Sepang and running out of gas at the end, we here able to reduce our handicap weights by 15 kg. In that sense I may have contributed to winning the class pole today (laughs). Anyway, I'm going to do may best tomorrow.
