The qualifying for the INTERNATIONAL POKKA 1000 km, Round 6 of the 2007 AUTOBACS SUPER GT, took place at the Suzuka Circuit (Mie Pref.) on Aug. 18. In the GT500 class the No. 3 YellowHat YMS MobaHO! TOMICA Z driven by Masataka Yanagida won pole position, while the class pole for the GT300 class went to the No.2 Privée KENZO Asset Shiden driven by Hiroki Kato.

Qualifying #1  Weather:Fine | Course:Dry | Air Temp. 32°C | Track Temp. 48°C

The first qualifying session began at 10:00. The first 20 minutes were for the GT300 class, the next 20 minutes for the GT500 class and the final 20 minutes for both classes. The air temperature was 35 degrees C. and the strong sunlight made the track temp. rise to 45 degrees C.

During the 20-minute session for the GT300 class, few cars took to the course in the first five minutes of the session. Among the first to make a move was the No. 77 CUSCO DUNLOP SUBARU IMPREZA (Tetsuya Yamano). As the serious time attacks began about seven minutes into the session, it was the cars running on Michelin tires that turned in the fastest times. No. 101 TOY STORY Racing apr MR-S (Hiroaki Ishiura) took the early lead with a time in the mid 2 min. 7 sec. range. That was soon bettered by the. No. 43 ARTA Garaiya (Morio Niita) with a 2 min. 6.605 sec. lap. When the No. 31 DOUBLEHEAD apr MR-S (Kyosuke Mineo) ran the third fastest time, it gave the Michelin teams a 1-2-3 sweep of the top qualifying positions. With just over five minutes remaining in the session the No. 62 WILLCOM ADVAN VEMAC 408R (Shinsuke Shibahara) 2 min. 7.005 sec. time, which failed to break the 2 min. 7 sec. barrier but was enough to move it into 2nd position ahead of No. 101. With less than five minutes remaining in the GT300 session, the No.13 ENDLESS ADVAN SENZAIKAKUMEI Z (Masami Kageyama) ran the third fastest time and the No.2 Privée KENZO Asset Shiden (Hiroki Kato) moved up to 4th position. The session ended shortly after the No.7 RE AMEMIYA ADVAN RX-7 (Hiroyuki Iiri) moved up to claim 10th position and qualify for the afternoon Super Lap.

Entering the GT500 class session, only about four machines took to the track during the first ten minutes of the session. Among those, the No.6 Forum Eng. SC430 (Bjorn Wirdheim) ran about one second faster than the others with a 1 min. 56.379 sec. lap time. The other teams didn't begin their serious timed laps until about three minutes before the end of the session. The No.18 TAKATA DOME NSX (Takashi Kogure) was the first to take the lead with a 1 min. 56.141sec. lap. This was followed by a 1 min. 56.284 sec. lap by the No.8 ARTA NSX (Daisuke Ito). In the last minute of the session the teams all began their final attacks. The No.12 CALSONIC IMPUL Z (Benoit Treluyer) was the first to break the 2 min. 6 sec. barrier and claim the lead with a time of 1 min. 55. 981 sec. lap. In the end, however, the No.32 EPSON NSX (Loic Duval) bettered that with a 1 min. 55. 817 sec. lap to top the qualifying order. Behind that in 4th position came the No. 3 YellowHat YMS MobaHO! TOMICA Z (Masataka Yanagida). This knocked the No. 1 houzan TOM'S SC430 (Andre Lotterer) and the No. 23 XANAVI NISMO Z (Satoshi Motoyama) out of the top ten qualifiers. In the following 20-minute mixed class session, none of the teams were able to improve on their positions. Due to the length of this race and the relative ease of moving up from behind, it appears that some teams were not seriously concerned about qualifying for the afternoon's Super Lap.

Qualifying #2/Super Lap  Weather:Fine | Course:Dry | Air Temp. 32° | Track Temp. 48°

The second qualifying session began from 14:15. The first 20 minutes were for the GT300 class and the second 20 minutes for the GT500 class. Although there had been a number of third drivers who had not been able to clear the qualifying-standard lap time in the morning session, all in the GT500 class were able to clear it in the afternoon session. In the GT300 class, however, Naohiro Furuya of the No. 67 triple a GALLARDO RG-3 triple and Kazuyuki Nishizawa of the No.26 YUNKER-POWER TAISAN PORSCHE were unable to run an officially qualifying time. In the case of team No.26, it appeared that they planned to race with just two drivers. As for No. 67, Tsubasa Kurosawa ran a timed lap but was unable to clear the qualifying standard time. In the end, he was given permission to compete in Sunday's race based on a decision of the steward of the meeting.

The Super Lap began with the GT300 class. Running third, Nobuteru Taniguchi in the No.26 YUNKER-POWER TAISAN PORSCHE made optimum use of the fastest top speed of his Porsche to run a time of 2 min. 7.522 sec. lap. After that, the No.31 DOUBLEHEAD apr MR-S (Kyosuke Mineo) as well as the No.77 CUSCO DUNLOP SUBARU IMPREZA (Tetsuya Yamano) and No.101 TOY STORY Racing apr MR-S (Hiroaki Ishiura) was unable to better that time. In contrast, Hiroki Kato in the No.2 Privée KENZO Asset Shiden was able improve greatly on his morning time to take the top position with a time of 2 min. 6.838 sec. The following runners, No.13 ENDLESS ADVAN SENZAIKAKUMEI Z (Masami Kageyama) and No.62 WILLCOM ADVAN VEMAC408R (Shinsuke Shibahara) were unable to better No. 2's time. The leader from the morning session, No.43 ARTA Garaiya (Morio Niita) was also unable to better that time and had to settle for 2nd with a 2 min. 6.995 sec. lap time. As a result, the No.2 Privée KENZO Asset Shiden claimed its third class pole of the season. Meanwhile, the Super Lap time of No.77 declared invalid when the car's minimum ground clearance was found to be in violation of the standard in the post-session inspection.

Next, the GT500 class Super Lap began at 15:45. The morning's 10th-place qualifier, the No. 38 ZENT CERUMO SC430 (Yuji Tachikawa) bettered its morning time with a 1 min. 56. 115 sec. lap. The following three runners, No.100 RAYBRIG NSX (Dominik Schwager), No. 6 Forum Eng. SC430 (Bjorn Wirdheim) and No. 17 REAL NSX (Toshihiro Kaneishi) were all unable to better his time. Next, the No. 8 ARTA NSX (Daisuke Ito) made a fast run despite its 50 kg of handicap weights and a one rank smaller air restrictors but still fell short of No. 38's time by a mere 0.004 sec. Next up was the No.25 ECLPSE ADVAN SC430 (Takeshi Tsuchiya). Taking full advantage of his machines larger air restrictors, Tsuchiya was able to run a 1 min. 55. 919 sec. lap to take the top position away from Tachikawa.
That lead would not last long, however, as the morning's 4th fastest qualifier, Masataka Yanagida in the No.3 YellowHat YMSMobaHO! TOMICA Z ran a nearly perfect lap to record a fast time of 1 min. 55. 781 sec. Next up was Takashi Kogure in the No.18 TAKATA DOME NSX, winners of the pole position in the last three rounds. This time, however, he was only able to run a mediocre time in the mid 1 min. 56 sec. range. Next came Benoit Treluyer in the No. 12 CALSONIC IMPUL Z, who never fails to excite the crowd with his aggressive driving. His attempt to take the lead failed with a spin-out at the Deguner. The last runner in the GT500 Super Lap, Loic Duval in the No. 32 EPSON NSX, had already finished his warm-up when this spin-out took place and was forced to start all over while Treluyer's car was being removed from the course. When Duval finally made his run, he just fell short of No.3's time with a 1 min. 55. 898 sec. lap. This may have been the result of the dirt on the track at the Deguner due to No.12's spin-out and the slight effects of having to repeat the warm-up after the delay.
As a result, the pole position went to the No.3 YellowHat YMS MobaHO! TOMICA Z. For MOTOR SPORT, this was the first PP since the one won by Eric Comas at the Tokachi round 4 of the 2004 season. As for Masataka Yanagida, he has one class pole to his credit from round five of the 2004 season at Motegi, but this is his first PP in the GT500 class. In the end, the top three machines turned to be three different makes, with the pole going to a Fairlady Z 2nd to an NSX and 3rd to an SC430. What's more, the top three all ran on different makes of tires, with the No.3 on Bridgestone, No. 32 on Dunlop and No. 25 on Yokohama tires. With an order like this it was impossible to say which car and which tires were at an advantage going into Sunday's race.

I drove the time attacks for our team one other time this season at Sepang, but I didn't qualify for the Super Lap. So, this time I wanted to go out and run times that I could be proud of, and I am glad that I was able to do that today. It makes me even happier that I got the pole position too. There was an element of luck involved in our winning this PP. There was probably some loss in tire performance for No. 32 when it had to run about two extra laps after the break (for the spin-out of No. 12). I guess those developments turned out to be lucky for me. It is a long race tomorrow, so if both of us drivers can keep cool and calm, we should be able to get a good result.

During the race week we have tried different tires and settings and the direction [of the settings] has been getting better. So, I felt that we would be able to qualify for the Super Lap. The [4th place] position we got in morning was just about what we were hoping for, and I thought that it would be difficult to improve on that. Still, I wanted to try for a better result and was able to convince the team to try new settings for the afternoon session. Those settings seem to have been the right choice. I never expected to take the pole position, so I am very happy that I was able to. But, now that we have won the pole position, it will be meaningless if we don't get a podium finish tomorrow. We have a strong additional helper [Yoshimoto] this time, so I want to make it all happen.
