On Sept. 8, the qualifying for the Motegi GT 300 km Race, Round 7 of the 2007 AUTOBACS SUPER GT, took place at the Twin Ring Motegi (Tochigi Pref.) and the No. 18 TAKATA DOME NSX driven by Takashi Kogure won the GT500 class pole position, while the GT300 class pole went to the No. 43 ARTA Garaiya.

Qualifying #1  Weather:Fine | Course:Dry | Air Temp. 32°C | Track Temp. 43°C

The first qualifying session began at 10:25 with the first 20 minutes for the GT300 and the second 20 minutes for the GT500 class. The final 20 minutes was a mixed session for both classes. The day saw clear skies from morning and the session began in hot and humid conditions with an air temperature of 32 degrees C. and a track surface temperature of 43 degrees.

The qualifying for this round was held in "knock down" style format different from the Super Lap format used in the series until now. In this format the finishing order for the first session has no influence on the second session or the final grid order. However, if both drivers from each team don't clear the qualifying time in this session, their team will have to start the race from the rear of the starting grid. Therefore, the first goal in this session is for both of the drivers to run a qualifying time. Also, many teams used this session to do some last-minute work on their machine settings.

With the exception of a car running off the course at the "S" curve and bringing out the red flag once during the GT300 class time, there were no other major incidents during this first session.
The fastest times recorded during this session were by the No. 18 TAKATA DOME NSX (Takashi Kogure) in the GT500 class and the No. 26 YUNKER-POWER TAISAN PORSCHE (Nobuteru Taniguchi) in the GT300 class.

Qualifying #2/Super Lap  Weather:Fine | Course:Dry | Air Temp. 31° | Track Temp. 36°

The second qualifying sessions began at 14:40. In the knock-down qualifying system adopted for this round, the first session had allowed each class a period of 15 minutes for timed lap runs and the machines with the best times (12 GT500 machines, 20 GT300 machines) could then proceed to the second session. In the second session, each class was given ten minutes for timed laps and the top eight GT500 machines and top 10 GT300 machines could then proceed to the third session. In this third and final session, the two classes once again had ten minutes each for time attacks to determine their places on the starting grid for the race.

In the first session, four GT500 were eliminated (knocked down) and could not proceed to the second session. They were the No. 100 RAYBRIG NSX (Dominik Schwager), the No. 17 REAL NSX(Toshihiro Kaneishi), the No. 39 DENSO SARD SC430 (Andre Couto) and the No. 24 WOODONE ADVAN Clarion Z(Joao Paulo Lima De Oliveira). No. 24 and No. 39 had been among the first out on the track and had run their timed laps early. It appeared that this strategy had been a mistake. The fastest time was recorded by the No.18 TAKATA DOME NSX (Takashi Kogure) at 1 min. 45.219 sec.

In session two, the teams didn't begin their timed laps until the last five minutes of the session. Then they ran hard to be among the top eight (GT500) machines to proceed to the third session. The fastest among these second session times was the 1 min. 45.921 sec. lap run by Yuji Tachikawa in the No.38 ZENT CERUMO SC430. The only other machine to break the 1 min. 46 sec. barrier was the No.22 MOTUL AUTECH Z (Michael Krumm). The fastest qualifier in the first session, Kogure in car No. 18, came third in the second session unable to dip under 1 min. 46 sec. The four machines eliminated in this second session were the No. 6 FORUM Eng.SC430 (Tatsuya Kataoka), the No. 35 BANDAI 00 DUNLOP SC430 (Naoki Hattori), the No. 23 XANAVI NISMO Z (Satoshi Motoyama) and No.1 houzan TOM'S SC430 (Juichi Wakisaka). The time of Wakisaka in machine No.1 was exactly one second behind leader Tachikawa in No. 38 at 1 min. 46.921 sec.

No.43 ARTA Garaiya

In session three, the drivers waited once again until the last five minutes of their session to begin their timed attacks. Having run two timed attacks already, everyone assumed that the tires of the machines were beginning to lose some of their grip, but Kogure in No. 18 ran time of 1 min. 45.720 sec. that defied that view. Although this didn't better his time from the first session when the tires were fresh, it was faster than anyone had run in the second session. The top runner from the second session, Tachikawa in No. 38, tried to better this time but was unable to improve on his own second-session time. Still, his 1 min. 45.987 sec. lap was good enough to give him second position. Filling out the top three came the No. 32 EPSON NSX (Loic Duval), which gave the teams running on Dunlop tires a sweep of the top places. The Fairlady Z machines No. 22 MOTUL AUTECH Z (Michael Krumm) and No. 3 YellowHat YMS MobaHO! TOMICA Z (Masataka Yanagida) came in 4th and 5th respectively, while the season point-ranking leader, No. 8 ARTA NSX (Daisuke Ito) came 6th.

This gave the No.18 TAKATA DOME NSX team its fifth pole position of the season (one for Michigami, four for Kogure). This represents a new SUPER GT/JGTC record for most PPs by a single machine in one season.

After the first GT300 class session, a machine violation was found in the GT300 No. 101 TOY STORY Racing apr MR-S and its first session time was thereby canceled. After passing a second inspection with modifications, No. 101 went out and scored the fastest time in the second session. However, because its time from the first session was canceled, the team will start the race from the very tail of the grid. Also, because driver Tsubasa Kurosawa of the No. 67 triple a GALLARDO RG-3 failed to run a qualifying time in the first session. As a result, his team will start the race from the 24th position on the grid, one space in front of No.101.In addition to these two machines, the No. 9 LEYJUN DUNLOP MT900 (Katsuhiko Tsutsui) and two other machines were knocked out of the qualifying at the end of session one.
Ten more GT300 machines were eliminated by the second session, including the No. 13 ENDLESS ADVAN SENZAIKAKUMEI Z (Masami Kageyama), the No. 19 WedsSport Celica (Yuhi Sekiguchi) and the No. 77 CUSCO DUNLOP SUBARU IMPREZA (Tetsuya Yamano). A mere one-thousandth of a second separated the 11th place machine No. 13 (Kageyama) and the 10th place machine No. 4 EBBRO 350R(Tetsuya Tanaka) at the cut-off point for the third session. In the third session for the top ten GT300 class machines, the No. 26 YUNKER-POWER TAISAN PORSCHE (Nobuteru Taniguchi) ran a 1 min. 55.696 sec. lap to take the lead. Being the fastest time run by any machine in the three GT300 sessions at that point, everyone thought that it would be difficult to beat, but Shinichi Takagi in the No. 43 ARTA Garaiya succeeded in running an impressive 1 min. 55.696 sec. lap on his used tires to claim the class pole position. In second place came the No. 26 YUNKER-POWER TAISAN PORSCHE and in third the No. 5 KUMHO Pro( MACH-GO 320R, making a mixed top three of three different machine makes and three different tire brands.

This was the first "knock-down" type qualifying and because we could only use one set of tires, I consulted with our manager, the engineers and Michigami san, and in the end everything went well. The grip got worst the more I ran, so in the first and second sessions I was careful to not let the tires slide coming out of the corners. So, I was only running at 80 or 90% of capacity, but I still managed to get better times than I expected. But in the third session I pushed it 100% because it was the last run, and was able to win the pole position. Just after I finished my fastest lap I heard over the radio that I shouldn't let up because [No. 38] was still running. But by that point my rear tires had lost their grip and it was shaking during braking, so I thought I wouldn't get any better time. On the back straight I heard that I had gotten the pole position and I was really relieved. With this, I have now won four pole positions this season, but we have not had good results in the actual races. So, tomorrow I want to run the kind of strong and sure race that will change the flow of things that has hampered us until now

Since we can only use one set of tires in the "knock-down" qualifying format, you have to be able to run fast times while putting as little wear as possible on your tires. That made it difficult, because you can't warm up the tires much on the out-lap and you have to make your run without the tires being fully warmed up. On the other hand, in the third session you can run with everything that is left in the tires, and since we had chosen to run on harder compound tires, I was able to run hard from the out-lap and warm up the tires well so that I could run a fast lap on my third lap when the balance was good. We have had a lot of bad luck this year, so I want to go out relaxed tomorrow with the intention of not getting hit by anyone and not dumping into anyone so that we can get a podium finish
