The qualifying for the FUJI GT 300km RACE, Round 9 of the 2007 AUTOBACS SUPER GT, took place at Fuji Speedway in Shizuoka Pref. on Nov. 3, and the GT500 pole position was won by the No. 12 CALSONIC IMPUL Z driven by Benoit Treluyer while the GT300 class pole went to the No. 101 TOY STORY Racing apr MR-S driven by Kazuya Oshima.

Qualifying #1  Weather:Cloudy | Course:Dry | Air Temp. 12°C | Track Temp. 14°C

The first qualifying session began at 10:10 in the morning under cloudy skies with a refreshingly cool air temperature of 12 degrees C. at the base of Mt. Fuji. The first 20-minute session was for the GT300 class. First to post a lap time in the 1 min. 42 sec. range was the No. 55 DHG ADVAN FORD GT (Daisuke Ikeda), but that was immediately bettered by the No. 33 HANKOOK NSC PORSCHE (Mitsuhiro Kinoshita). It was around ten minutes into the session when most of the teams began their serious timed-lap attempts, and the top position was soon taken by the No. 88 AKTIO MURCIE RG-1 (Koji Yamanishi) with a time of 1 min. 42.414 sec. After that, one machine after another turned in times in the 1 min. 42 sec. range. The first to break the 1 min. 42 sec. barrier was the No. 31 DOUBLE HEAD apr MR-S (Kyosuke Mineo). On his first timed lap, Mineo ran a time of 1 min. 41.816 sec., and then he bettered that on his next lap with a 1 min. 41.435 sec. time. Following him, the No. 2 Privee KENZO Asset Shiden (Hiroki Katoh) and the No. 101 TOY STORY Racing apr MR-S (Kazuya Oshima) also ran times in the 1 min. 41 sec. range but were unable to match No. 31's time.

The next 20 minutes were for the GT500 class. As usual, the first ones to go out on the course were the No. 39 DENSO SARD SC430 (Andre Couto), the No. 25 ECLIPSE ADVAN SC430 (Takeshi Tsuchiya) and the No. 35 BANDAI 00 DUNLOP SC430 (Naoki Hattori). Joining them was Michael Krumm in the No. 22 MOTUL AUTECH Z, who ran a time in the 1 min. 34 sec. range to take the early lead.
The other teams came out on the course with about ten minutes remaining in the session. The No. 12 CALSONIC IMPUL Z (Benoit Treluyer) was the first to run a time under 1 min. 34 sec. Then the No. 1 houzan TOM'S SC430 (Andre Lotterer), the No. 32 EPSON NSX (Loic DUVAL) and the No. 22 all dipped under 1 min. 34 sec. but were unable to better No. 12's time. With three or four minutes remaining in the session, it was the "Fuji Meister" Yuji Tachikawa in the No. 38 ZENT CERUMO SC430 who finally bettered No. 12's time with a 1 min. 33.369 sec. lap. It looked for a moment that this would be the fastest class time until, with just one minute remaining in the session, Katsutomo Kaneishi in the No. 17 REAL NSX ran a 1 min. 33.351 sec. lap to grab the lead. No. 17 was running with a new 4-liter engine introduced at the last round. In that round the team had unfortunately been forced to retire from the race, but it seems that the machine definitely has enough speed.

The last 20 minutes of the session were for both classes. Here, the teams primarily used the time to have their second drivers clear the qualifying time requirement. By the end of the session. All the drivers had gotten their qualifying times. This session also gave teams that had not qualified for the Super Lap with a top-ten time to make a second attempt to break into the top ten using a second set of new tires. The one machine that succeeded in doing this was the No. 26 YUNKER-POWER TAISAN PORSCHE (Nobuteru Taniguchi). Despite having recorded the fastest time the previous day, No. 26 had timed its runs poorly with regard to the other machines on the track during the GT500 session and had only managed to post an 11th-place time. In this final mixed session, however, Taniguchi was able to post the fifth fastest time and qualify for the Super Lap. This in turn knocked the No. 46 houzan DUNLOP Z (Kota Sasaki) out of its Super Lap spot. Following in 12th position was the No. 13 ENDLESS ADVAN SENZAIKAKUMEI Z (Tomonobu Fujii) and in 13th position the No. 5 KUMHO Proμ MACH-GO 320R (Hironori Takeuchi) with a personal best that still wasn't good enough to break into the top ten.
After the session was completed, a minimum weight violation was found in No. 31 that disqualified all its qualifying times and knocked it out of the Super Lap. This opened up a spot for the No. 13 ENDLESS ADVAN SENZAIKAKUMEI Z.

Qualifying #2/Super Lap  Weather:Cloudy | Course:Dry | Air Temp. 17° | Track Temp. 25°

The second qualifying session started at 13:50. It began with 15 minutes for the GT300 class followed by 15 minutes for the GT500 class. The skies had cleared from around the time of the conclusion of the morning session, so the afternoon session was held under blue skies, with the air temperature having risen to 17 degrees C. and the track surface temperature to 25 degrees.

The GT300 class Super Lap began at 14:25. The first runner was the No. 13 ENDLESS ADVAN SENZAIKAKUMEI Z (Tomonobu Fujii), which had moved up to 10th position after the penalty disqualified the No. 31 DOUBLE HEAD apr MR-S. Of the top four ranked season title contenders that still have a shot at the title, the first to run was the No. 62 WILLCOM ADVAN VEMAC408R (Shinsuke Shibahara). With a time of 1 min. 42.643 sec., No. 62 became the initial leader. Among the top four rankers, the team with the hardest shot at the title, the No. 43 ARTA Garaiya (Shinichi Takagi) ran as the 8th fastest qualifier from the morning session. In the first sector of the course, Takagi was 0.3 sec. faster than No. 62, and he continued to widen his lead in the secondand third sectors to finish his lap with a time of 1 min. 42. 295 sec., which put him in the lead. Next up, the No. 101 TOY STORY Racing apr MR-S (Kazuya Oshima) outran that time over every sector of the course to post the fastest time of 1 min. 42. 068 sec. and grab the tentative pole position. The last runner was the No. 2 Privée KENZO Asset Shiden (Hiroki Katoh). Despite running the fastest time yet through the second sector up to the 300R Coca Cola corner, slower first and third sector times made Katoh fall short of No. 2's time with a 1 min. 42.403 sec., which left him in 3rd position.
As a result, the No. 101 TOY STORY Racing apr MR-S took the class pole followed by another Michellin tire team, the No. 43 ARTA Garaiya in 2nd place. This leaves the No. 2 Privée KENZO Asset Shiden to start the final race in a tough position in terms of winning the season title.

After a 5-minute interval, the GT500 class Super Lap began at 14:58. The first runner was the No. 1 houzan TOM'S SC430 (Andre Lotterer), posting a time of 1 min. 33. 766 sec., faster than its morning time. None of the next five machines to run could better this time, and it wasn't until a brilliant lap by the No. 12 CALSONIC IMPUL Z (Benoit Treluyer) that it was finally beaten. Over the first sector of the course, Treluyer was already 0.1 seconds faster than No. 1's time, and even as he skidded all four tires through the hairpin and the Nets Corner, he retained control of the machine with no time loss. By the end of the lap he was 0.744 sec. faster than No.1 with a record time of 1 min. 33.022 sec. The next runner, the No. 32 EPSON NSX (Loic DUVAL), managed to better No. 1's time but fell short of No. 12's record by 0.670 sec. with a 1 min. 33.692 sec. lap. The last runner in the Super Lap, the No. 17 REAL NSX (Toshihiro Kaneishi), was clearly running without its tires fully warmed up through the second sector of the course, causing it to finish 2nd with a time of 1 min. 33.671 sec.
As a result, the No. 12 CALSONIC IMPUL Z claimed the pole position. This was the team's first PP since round six of last season, the Suzuka 1000km. From this pole position, the team will also be shooting for its first win since last year's round six at Suzuka. Sitting in second position on the starting grid will be the No. 17 REAL NSX, which will be out to make amends for the last round, where it was unable to race because of machine trouble. In third position will be the No. 32 EPSON NSX. The top qualifier among the SC430 teams is the No. 1 houzan TOM'S SC430 in fourth position.

One of our goals this time at Fuji was to win the pole position. We haven't been able to get good results this season. We have only finished on the podium once this year, at the Malaysia round. So, I am very happy that we succeeded in getting the pole position for this final round of the season. In the Super Lap the temperature was cool and it was hard to warm up the tires sufficiently. I didn't run well over the third sector of the course in the first qualifying session in the morning, and I was worried about how things would go there during the Super Lap. But in the end I was able to run the third sector very well and get a good time. The other goal we can to Fuji this time with is of course to win the race. And, I really want to do that.

On Friday I thought it would be difficult for us to win the pole position this time, so we really worked hard on the machine settings for the qualifying today. Considering that, it is still hard to believe that we got the PP. In the session before the Super Lap, we got our best time on the fifth lap I ran. But, in the Super Lap you have to run your best time on your second lap, so I was working hard to get the tires warmed up. Still, on my Super Lap the front tires weren't warmed up completely for about the first half of the lap, and that cost me some time. Over the last section of the course that tires were warmed up fully and I was able to make up for the lost time and win the pole position. In the race tomorrow, I want to make full use of the good car and engine conditions and the good tires to win tomorrow's race and get us the series title.
