SUPER GT's official pre-season test has started on Feb. 29th at Suzuka Circuit in Mie. Nissan's GT-R is back in the GT500 class for this season. More movements are seen in the driver's lineup compare to previous years including defending champion Daisuke Ito's switch to Toyota from Honda camp. To grasp an overview of the 2008 SUPER GT series including the GT300 class, the test is a must-see for all.
Weather: Fine | Course: Dry | Air Temp: 7°C | Track Temp: 10-18°C
Favored by good weather with mild wind at Suzuka Circuit, the first session started at 9:30.
A few teams in GT500 class have undergone test runs at Sepang Circuit in Malaysia as well as Okayama International Circuit before coming in to Suzuka. Their main objectives of this official test would be to select tires and firm up car settings for the season opener while reconciling data from off-season tests with data they had gathered at Suzuka from the past. But some other teams were not able to clock in enough tests in the off-season, so every team had different plans for the test.
In the midst of teams executing different strategies, No. 23 XANAVI NISMO GT-R (Benoit Treluyer) marked the top time of the session with 1 min 53 sec 383. The second fastest was No. 36 PETRONAS TOM'S SC430 (Andre Lotterer) followed by No. 100 RAYBRIG NSX (Yuji Ide) at third, rounding up the top group that marked 1 min 53 sec. In the last year's pre-season test in Suzuka that took place in the same time of the year as this year, NSX's dominated the top 5 of the time list. But it was a different story this year with the three manufacturers placing a car each in the top 3 in the order of GT-R, SC430, and NSX. The fastest time of the last year's test, though, was 1 min 52 sec 081, which is over a second faster than the best time of this session.
Weather: Fine | Course: Dry | Air Temp: 14°C | Track Temp: 26°C
The second session started at 14:30. Blue sky remained over Suzuka Circuit.
About 10 minutes into the session, No.1 ARTA NSX (Ralph Firman) went out of the track at the entry to the Casio Triangle (chicane) and hit the sponge barrier on the track side with the back of the car. The bodywork was severely damaged and the sponge barrier spread out all over the place forcing the session to be red flagged. Session resumed after 10 minutes of clean up. Repair work was immediately initiated on the No. 1 car after the accident, consequently ending the day for the car.
In terms of lap time, No. 18 TAKATA Dome NSX (Takashi Kogure) marked the best of the session with 1 min 54 sec 206, but the time dropped compare to the first session's best. Whether teams were holding back or concentrating on their test menu with objectives on something else other than lap times is unknown but it made it rather skeptical to see such a drop in the result.
Last year's champion Daisuke Ito (No.6 ENEOS SC430) finished his first official test day with the new team with the best at 1 min 55 sec 160.
In the GT300 class, No.2 Privée KENZO Asset Shiden (Hiroki Katoh) was prominently lapping at good time from the beginning of the session. The team is up to put their all the best from the start of the season to take away the series title which they missed by an inch last year. Their best times in the first and second sessions were 2 min 07 sec 036 and 2 min 06 sec 798, respectively, placing them on the top of the time sheet of GT300 in both sessions. Second fastest time of the day went to No. 81 Fairlady Z (Takayuki Aoki/Tomonobu Fujii). Running on Michelin tires from this year, No. 46 MOLA Z (Kazuki Hoshino/Hironobu Yasuda) clocked at 2 min 07 sec 231 giving them the third fastest time of the afternoon session. No.11 JIMCENTER ADVAN F430 (Tetsuya Tanaka/Masayuki Ueda) fielded a brand new F430 and finished the first day of the car with a best at 2 min 08 sec 820.
