【Round 7 Preview】 Will Autopolis' first 450km distance increase intensity?

【Round 7 Preview】 Will Autopolis' first 450km distance increase intensity?の画像

Attention is getting stronger on the title outlook as the season enters into the final phase. The series returns to Kyushu on October 14th (Sat) and 15th (Sun) as the "AUTOPOLIS GT 450km RACE", Round 7 of the 2023 AUTOBACS SUPER GT series at Autopolis in Oita Prefecture. With 2 races remaining, including upcoming Round 7, in this season, the competition is likely to get more intense than any others from the season as the teams will be trying to stay in the title contention until the final round. In addition, the race will be fought out in Autopolis' first 450km distance which the race outcome could be influenced by teams' strategies on the pit stop, tire selection and changing timing, etc. Halved success weight on majority of cars could make the battlefield in not only the top group but anywhere volatile as teams will be desperate to finish the race with as many points as possible. This year's Round 7 can become the fiercest contest of this season, or, perhaps, in the history of Autopolis.

■Top 2 rankers battling with mere gap. Can't take eyes off from No. 3 and 36 cars.

No.3 Niterra MOTUL Z (Katsumasa Chiyo / Mitsunori Takaboshi) is standing at top of the driver point ranking in the GT500 class with 51 points. No.36 au TOM’S GR Supra (Sho Tsuboi / Ritomo Miyata) follows with a mere gap of 2 points. Since the 3rd place No.23 MOTUL AUTECH Z (Tsugio Matsuda / Ronnie Quintarelli) is somewhat in distance with 11 points behind from the top, the attention is firstly put on the actions of No.3 and 36 cars.
In fact, No.3 car possesses a chance to become champion at the Round 7. If they win (and accumulate 72 or 71 points in total) and all teams, including No.36, in the top group of the point standing end with almost no points to create the point difference of 21 points or more, then the championship will be decided without waiting for the last race of the season. The possibility is very low, but a similar situation has become reality in the past. At the Round 7 Autopolis in 2012, No.1 S Road REITO MOLA GT-R (Masataka Yanagida / Ronnie Quintarelli) showed superb performance in the rainy race after starting from 10th in the qualifying to complete a come-from-behind win. All cars at 3rd to 5th in the standing finished the race in 5th or lower position which enabled the title determination with one race remaining in the season. For this time around, No.3 car is actually in a difficult situation with 51kg of success weight and being the only car with the fuel flow restrictor limitation, but if it becomes a rainy race like in 2012, then maybe we can see reproduction of the scene.
Of course, the first car to prevent that is No.36 car. No worries if it wins, but the car needs to finish in front of No.3 car, or at least at right behind, no matter how the weather is going to be.

■Mid group of the standing is a tight pack. Win or podium is the only target at Round 7.

Cars behind the top 2 cars are packed tightly together with the 3rd ranked No.23 car standing at 11 points behind and all others down to 11th position staying with 3 points or less to each other. In another word, if they cannot score big points, win, or podium-finish at upcoming Round 7 and allow the point difference against the top car to increase to 21 points or more, then they will be out from the title contention.
For No.23 car which is the leader of the Nissan Z GT500 squad, it would not want to let No.3 car, a sister car that is exactly the same in terms of maintenance, car model, and tire manufacturer, take away the crown so easily. There has been a time, GT-R era, when the Nissan cars dominated the podium. No.23 car must be keen to score their second win at their favorite Autopolis.
The NSX-GT fleet would not want to forfeit the title contention here especially when this is the last year of Honda NSX-GT. ARTA, fielding 4th-ranked No.16 ARTA MUGEN NSX-GT (Nirei Fukuzumi / Hiroki Otsu) and 7th-ranked No.8 ARTA MUGEN NSX-GT (Tomoki Nojiri / Toshiki Oyu), is the leading force of the NSX-GT squad with a victory at the Round 5 and 6. When it comes to Autopolis, No.17 Astemo NSX-GT (Koudai Tsukakoshi / Nobuharu Matsushita), which was imposed disqualification despite crossing the finish line first at the previous race, is definitely a candidate for the win. NSX-GT itself has been strong at Autopolis if you look at the recent results, thus, there is a high possibility for other teams of the squad to finish in an upper position. Attention should be given to Iori Kimura who will be teaming up with Tadasuke Makino in No.100 STANLEY NSX-GT to substitute for Naoki Yamamoto, who will unfortunately be absent as a precaution due to an injury he suffered from the previous race. Although registered as the 3rd driver of No.8 car for the Round 4, Kimura did not drive practically, therefore, this will be his GT500 debut in a real sense.
There have been times when the TOYOTA GR Supra GT500 and Toyota cars dominated the podium also, so the group does not disfavor Autopolis. Moreover, their tweak on the aerodynamics has been very effective this season, bringing sound results to the fleet at circuits that require focus on downforce like Suzuka. With Autopolis having similar characteristics, the fleet can be expected to showcase runs with a difference taste. Not only No.36 car at second in the point standing but also 5th- and 6th - ranked No.14 ENEOS X PRIME GR Supra (Kazuya Oshima / Kenta Yamashita) and No.39 DENSO KOBELCO SARD GR Supra (Yuhi Sekiguchi / Yuichi Nakayama), respectively, must be coming in with a strong determination for nothing but win. We would also want to watch closely on whether Tachikawa, who has announced retirement from SUPER GT after this season, and No.38 ZENT CERUMO GR Supra (Yuji Tachikawa / Hiroaki Ishiura) can achieve 6th pole position at here and also the first win at Autopolis, which has been their long-time homework.

■Center-light on top-ranked & defending winner No.52 and No.18 looking to pay back.

In the driver ranking of GT300 class, No.52 Saitama Toyopet GB GR Supra GT (Hiroki Yoshida / Kohta Kawaai) emerged to the top by winning the previous race with a lead of 10 points from the 2nd - and 3rd -place cars (tie) in the standing. No.52 car now has a chance to clinch the title if it can complete back-to-back win at the Round 7 Autopolis and have No.18 UPGARAGE NSX GT3 (Takashi Kobayashi / Syun Koide) and No.7 Studie BMW M4 (Seiji Ara / Bruno Spengler) at 2nd and 3rd in the standing, respectively, as well as 4th-ranked No.56 REALIZE NISSAN MECHANIC CHALLENGE GT-R (Joao Paulo de Oliveira / Teppei Natori) sink to the lower pack. The possibility may be quite low, but, considering No.52 car is the winner of last year's Autopolis race, it is certainly a victorious candidate regardless of the title.
No.18 car would want to narrow the gap against, or overtake if possible, No.52 car at the lead before moving on to the final race of the season. The car made an impressive overtaking just before the goal and grabbed the win at the previous race..., but the delight was totally capsized by a disqualification given from a judgment that the car did not barely meet the minimum clearance in the post-race inspection, which dropped them back to the 2nd place in the point standing too. The team would want to undisputedly score their third win of the season at upcoming Round 7 held on Autopolis, where its layout is sought to be favorable to NSX GT3, to capture their long-awaited title at the final round as well as to make up for the disgrace./p>

Top-ranked No.52 car is chased by two other cars, No.7 car holding the same point as No.18 car at 40 points and the defending champion No.56 car having 39 points. BMW M4 GT3 wearing No.7, though, could not finish in points at its first take on Autopolis last year. No.56 car, too, could only manage a lower position in recent 2 years, so, for these two cars, match-up with the track is something that needs to be worked on in order to stay in the title contention at the final round.
No.61 SUBARU BRZ R&D SPORT (Takuto Iguchi / Hideki Yamauchi) and No.65 LEON PYRAMID AMG (Naoya Gamou / Takuro Shinohara) must be coming in with "win or nothing" determination. Both cars have been fast at Autopolis, and no win could mean dropping out from the title contention to them. Iguchi, especially, who is from Fukuoka Prefecture, always has a group of supporters visiting Autopolis every year. He would want to embrace the power from his supporters to nail his first win of the season. New cars of this season, No.31 apr LC500h GT (Koki Saga / Kazuto Kotaka / Yuki Nemoto) and No.88 JLOC Lamborghini GT3 (Takashi Kogure / Yuya Motojima), which switched to Huracan GT3 EVO2 from the Round 4, will be, of course, running on the Autopolis circuit for the first time. It would also be interesting to see how these two cars can perform on the track.
