Fuji Speedway will be a major host of the series once again for the 2025-season starting from the official test scheduled for March 29th and 30th to Round 2 (May 3rd/4th) and Round 4 (August 2nd /3rd). TGR Corner (turn 1), a popular view area of the Fuji track, has undergone remodeling in January which added a gravel zone at outside of the curb. Located right after Fuji’s famous 1.5km long main straightaway, TGR Corner has been an important point to overtake for drivers. The location outside of the corner was composed of green belt beyond the curb and asphalt run-off area before. That allowed minimum damage to the car and returning to the track with a smallest time loss when a car goes off from mis-braking or gets pushed out in a battle. With the reconstruction, firstly, the track surface from the entrance of TGR Corner to HYUNDAI bridge located beyond turn 2 was renewed. The curb spanning 84 meter along the outside of TGR Corner is now lining adjacently with 2.5-meter wide gravel area, and the asphalt surface starts from the edge of gravel area and beyond. The revision was initiated by an instruction from FIA (Fédération Internationale l’Automobile) that supervises the circuit to prevent the track-limit violation
Abstract from Fuji Speedway news release dated January 31st, “Installation of gravel area at TGR Corner”
With the asphalt surface covering the entire run-off area at outside of the turn like until last season, the risk of damaging the car was low even if the car ran beyond the track limit with all four wheels outside of the track, although a penalty could be imposed for a track-limit violation. The conduct was also observed at overseas circuits that host major series and considered as an issue which called for a similar prevention from around 2024. With this prevention, cars that go off the track over the curb at TRG Corner would be running on gravel that has less grip. It would also create a risk of damaging the car in addition to losing time significantly. Fuji Speedway is also alerting the drivers through its news release of the reconstruction by stating “Running on the gravel bed could scatter pebbles on the track which makes it slippery and can be dangerous with flying pebbles” and “Make sure to shake off the pebbles by using brakes, etc., on the surrounding run-off area before returning to the track”. TGR Corner is a key point for overtaking when it comes to a race. Cars can be diving into the corner side by side when the competition gets intense, but we can expect the drivers participating in the series to showcase a clean and exciting battle that you can only see in SUPER GT. You must check it out with your own eyes at an event hosted by Fuji Speedway this season.
